San Simón River

San Simón River, surrounded by a lush rainforest, is located two kilometers from the town of Chisec. Its crystalline turquoise waters, intricate karstic* formations and exotic limestone walls make it the perfect setting for an exhilarating river tubing tour.

* Karstic landscape is a special type of landscape developed in places where limestone is abundant. It is related to caves, turquoise waters and intermittent rivers, among others.

This is another extraordinary destination of Puerta al Mundo Maya. The river, turquoise water river, runs through lush rainforest, cardamom plantations and huge limestone rock. The more adventurous tourist will want to embark, floating on an inflated tube, through the rapids formed by the rock canyon that gives refuge to the river. This tour is available depending on the water volume and depth of the river (we recommend you do it in the rainy season between July and December, January of February).

You will surely also want to have a refreshing experience in the tranquil turquoise waters of the pond formed downstream on the river delta, either swimming or floating on inflated tubes through the curious rock formations. This place is called “Balneario Ma' Ximón” and it has a beautiful wooden bridge over the river, a huge “rancho” and wooden infrastructure ideal for a comfortable picnic surrounded by nature. This refreshing pond may be enjoyed fully all year long.

Services:

The local “El Porvenir II Association” also manages all of the tourism activities in the San Simón River. Services include:

  • Guided white water tubing tour
  • Equipment rental (tubes and life jackets)
  • Wooden infrastructure (ranch, bridge, wooden platform)

How to get there :

Access to the San Simón River is two kilometers from Chisec, on the highway that leads to the town of Raxruhá. Jul Iq' and B'omb'il Pek's Visitors' Center also works for the San Simón River. The walking entrance to the “Balneario Ma' Ximón” is located one kilometer from the Visitors' Center, towards Raxruhá. There you may also park your vehicle at the side of the road and walk 15 minutes through a nature trail (low effort) until you reach the pond.
